History
Barnabas Vilm, son of Othar Vilm was a dwarf born in the Marchant class. He was a fine upstanding young Dwarf, up until he discovered the value of…creative truths.
He became very good at these truths, good enough where he often would have someone come to his store angrly demanding a refund only to walk out thanking him for his time and carrying a new, more expensive item. This, however could only last so long and he was kicked out of Orzammar and before he had even hit the ground the Carta snatched him up. They knew the value of a good liar and why let something like that go to waste?
When the Breach happened though, everything changed. He was sent along with some members of the Carta to make sure the trade lines were still in place and sell anti-demon-possession rocks to rubes. “Do you see any demons? That means it’s workin!” He never made it to the site of the carnage however, because out of pure luck, he stumbled on one of the first rifts to open in Thetas.
It wasn’t that dangerous, at least after the Carta guards managed to clear out the demons, but what stuck Barnabas was that there was all of this stuff laying around the green portal. Most of it seemed useless, but there was one thing. It was about as long as his forearm, had a odd looking mean knob on one end and a hole that seemed like a perfect fit for his arm. He could feel some kinda mechanism in it, and naturally, he activated it. The device began to hum, the end starting to glow and when he let go of the button, two things happened in rapid succession.
First, Barnabas was thrown backwards, crashing into a tree, the device flying off of his arm, and slamming into a rock, sparks and metal bits flying everywhere. The second thing was that the tree that Barnabas was aiming at was mostly disintegrated, a circle of fire spreading slowly from the impact point. When the smoke cleared, Barnabas’s eyes were opened.
He could see that if every rift was spewing out treasure like this? Something priceless and unique that you could pick up and sell at an amazing markup. His partners were less thrilled, as the thought of fighting demons to to sell items that were spewed form the rifts did not seem like a good plan.
It was at this point that Barnabas decided on his own to part ways with the Carta, and alone in the wilds of Ferelden, he made his plan. A plan with the potential of near infinite money and wealth. All he needed was to scoop it off the ground.
Personality
Barnabas is a friendly sort, honest in his own way, which is stretching the value of “Honest” to a fair degree. He considers himself a storyteller in a way. People don’t want to go to him and just buy something, they want an Experience. Really, he’d let them down if he didn’t give them that. He won’t steal the shirt off your back, but he would buy it from you. The fact that he would then sell it to a noble for ten times what he paid for it is just a part of doing business. And the fact that he has repeat customers at the end of this shows just how good at his job he is.
His business was a simple application of the theory of supply and demand. If something is in low supply, it has high value. If something is infinitely rare, as in it is the only thing like it in the entire universe, then by logic, it is also infinitely valuable. Of course, Barnabas would have to sell it far below it’s actual value, but still, a very tidy profit was to be had. And these rifts were spewing out items that are not even from this universe, just laying on the ground. Their trash, useless bits and bobs were collectables to nobles. Add in to the equation the fact that Rifters arrive with the clothes on their backs and no local currency, Barnabas was well placed to be the unofficial moneychanger for the Rifters.
In terms of the Carta, Barnabas and the Carta mostly ignore each other. He keeps on sending them “reports” so that they can never claim that he was trading without their knowledge, but so far they’ve never responded. Barnabas takes this to mean they’re fine with it. Cause if they weren’t, well, they’d say something, right?
Opinions & Affiliations
Barnabas is refreshingly free of prejudice of almost any sort, as refusing to do business with someone based on their race or political alignment is just poor business. They’d just go somewhere else, so why make them leave? As for other groups, he was a member of the Carta, but they are "In an open relationship" now, after he started searching around rift sites.
Barnabas feels the legality of an action or event is always up for debate. What's legal today, may be illegal tomorrow, and then it'd be back to legal the day after, and if you just go far enough in a direction then no one's around to care.
He doesn't really care about Dwarven politics, he didn't when he was in Orzamaar, and after he got kicked out he cared even less. Human politics he only listens to so he knows who to sell stuff to. He's positive on the subjected Teventir and Orlais, as they have the money to burn and love collecting stupid rare crap. He's pretty lukewarm on the subject of Fereldan, as they're grouchy and don't like spending money. Same with Qunari, as they hate magic, but some of the stuff he sells as non-magic-magic is in very high demand.
They love batteries.
Strengths & Weaknesses
He is not a fighter in any way. He doesn't know how to fight, he never intends to learn, and if he does get into a fight, he will be the first to drop. He is a salesman and a talker, and he believes that if things have gotten to the level of violence, it’s out of his department.
He is a world, or multi-verse class bargainer, and is amazingly charming. The dwarf could talk the shit back up a bear, and he can argue with three different people in five different languages and still end up turning a profit. He speaks Orlesian, Tevene, Dwarvish, Antivan, and Qunlat, which by the way, is 75% of the reason that the Carta hasn't killed him. Yet.
On the subject of the Carta, he knows Too Much. He was one of the faces for the sellers of the Carta, and he knows blackmail intel on half the continent. However he hates the idea of information brokering as that sounds like Shaperate, which he is not down with.
There's three ways to break his normally sunny countenance. First, you can get one over on him in terms of deal (That hurts his professional pride). The second is to con him in someway (As he feels he should've seen it coming) The third is to steal from him, at which point he will politely remind you that he is in the Carta. (Technically. They're in an open relationship.)

All of these are up for debate, I will leave which of these he has up to mods discretion, if none are acceptable, I will generate a new list.
